G40 Conversion

The main thing with the G40 engine swap is that in principle the exchange is a very simple one as all the bits just bolt in place - the problem is that in many respects the G40 car is quite different to the other Mk 3 Polo's in the range.

Obviously the engine is different, although it uses exactly the same engine mount locations. Other differences include:

Doing the engine swap without appreciating that it is advisable to uprate the running gear, suspension and brakes would probably not be too wise. Ideally the donor engine would come from a car which is as complete as possible. A mildly damaged rear-end/rolled G40 would be ideal. The minimum parts to carry over would be the driveshafts, suspension legs, exhaust system, a complete wiring loom / ECU, radiator, fuel tank / pumps, and as many of the engine bay ancillary parts as poss. ie. radiator, expansion tank / emissions filters etc.

Once all these parts have been extracted and are in good working order (especially the charger as this is possibly the most expensive component to replace) - it really is a simple matter of bolting the appropriate parts onto the new vehicle. Getting all the right bits is the hard part!

If you are to do the work yourself, we would recommend that you get in touch with club G40, as there are many people in the club who have done this sort of conversion and would be glad to advise. Alternatively, we would recommend someone such as Jabbasport, who would no doubt be glad to carry out the work.
