Jabbasport R1 G40 Charger Service

At the end of January I received an e-mail from JabbaSport detailing their new R1 charger upgrade and induction kit (with cool air box). A few e-mails were exchanged and somehow I found myself being booked in for some work at JabbaSport's workshop in Crowland, Nr Peterborough.

The charger on my car has already had the Jabbasport touch to Stage 4 level. This includes a fully gas flowed inlet, outlet and scroll, in addition to the high RPM bearing conversion and internal belt upgrade. The car was also sporting a K&N induction kit and an AmD chip, which when last rolling roaded gave a pretty respectable 143 bhp and 139 lb ft of torque.

After eventually finding my way to Crowland, Brian took no time in whipping the charger off and stripping it down to be cleaned. All of the components were cleaned whilst the casing was reblasted and resprayed.

G-Charger stripped, cleaned and painted.

The whole time up to now had been an interesting tutorial on the internal workings of the g-charger. The next stage was the R1 upgrade.

The main part of R1 upgrade involves the opening up of the lower chamber, which increases the flow into the charger. The second part of the upgrade was the opening up the inlet port, with the increase in diameter going from the standard 55mm to 63mm.

The overall effect of this work is a massive and certainly marked increase in airflow into the charger.

The final part of the work was the fitting of Jabbasport's new induction kit and cold air box. The filter used on this is of colossal proportions, with a 3-inch pipe feeding the air into the charger. The addition of the ally cool air box not only reduces the amount of hot air from the engine going into the charger, it also nicely finishes off the cosmetics.

The finished job!

So to how does the car performs after this work... The improvement can only be described as amazing. It is comparable to the improvement felt when you have had the car chipped. I haven't had the car on a rolling road since the work, but the improvement is considerable. This difference will hopefully be qualified when I get round to sticking the car on the rollers again.

Another change in the car could be viewed as a positive or negative. This is the increase in the noise! . The dominant engine tone now emanates from the charger, which now has a totally different note to it. This tone is of a lower, deeper pitch giving a more aggressive rumble to the engine.

I think that the improvement given by this upgrade has been well worth the outlay, as far as my car is concerned. However, it has dawned on me that this R1 upgrade is a good way of increasing the boost given by the charger, but without having the extra strain given by the increase in the RPM when using a smaller pulley.
